Privacy & data

01Does my voice ever get uploaded?

No. Audio is captured to a temporary file on your Mac, transcribed locally by WhisperKit (or Apple Speech with requiresOnDeviceRecognition=true as a strict on-device fallback), and the temp file is deleted right after. We do not operate a voice-receiving endpoint. Verifiable in our security architecture.

02What is "Cloud Polish" and what does it send?

An optional Pro feature, off by default. When you turn it on and dictate, the post-transcription text (never audio) is sent to our authenticated proxy at api.voicetype.dev/v1/polish, which forwards it to OpenAI for a grammar/clarity pass. You can switch providers (local Qwen 3.5, Apple Intelligence, Ollama) in preferences any time.

03Do you collect voiceprints or biometrics?

No. Explicit non-collection clause in our Privacy Policy covering BIPA (Illinois), CUBI (Texas), MyHealthMyData (Washington), the NYC POST Act, and CCPA-CPRA Sensitive PI. We don't generate voiceprints, perform speaker identification, or do voice-print matching.

04Is telemetry on by default?

No. Funnel events (event names + plan/channel only — never transcript content) are off until you opt in in app preferences. The default macOS app makes zero telemetry calls.

05What goes through your servers, then?

Email + Stripe customer ID for billing; a random device identifier (UUID, stored in Keychain) for entitlement linking; a hashed recovery key; short-lived JWT session tokens; opt-in funnel events. Plus, only when Cloud Polish is enabled, post-transcription text. Full breakdown in Sub-processors.

06Where are your servers?

Vercel (US), Upstash (US, optional replication), Stripe (US/EU). For EU users, vendor SCCs apply. Hugging Face hosts the model files we download, in US and EU regions.

07How do I delete my account?

Email support@techbantu.us from the address you used to subscribe. We delete or de-identify what we can within fraud-prevention and legal retention requirements and confirm when done. App Store subscribers also need to manage Apple-held records via Apple's account tools.

08What's free?

30 minutes of recording per device per day, no card. Includes the local transcription engine, basic polish, all keyboard shortcuts, and all insertion targets. Pro removes the daily cap and unlocks Genius mode + Cloud Polish.

09App Store or direct — which is better?

Same app, same features. App Store: 7-day (monthly) / 14-day (annual) free trial, Apple billing, Apple's privacy report. Direct (Stripe): 30-day money-back guarantee, recovery-key device transfer, no Apple cut so we keep more for development. Pick whichever fits your billing preferences.

10What does the App Store free trial do?

It's a normal Apple subscription trial. After 7 days (monthly) or 14 days (annual), it auto-converts to paid unless you cancel before the end. Cancel via Apple's subscription tools. We can't override Apple's mechanic.

11How do refunds work for direct purchases?

30 days, no questions asked. Email support@techbantu.us with the email you bought with — we reverse the most recent paid period through Stripe to your original payment method. One refund per email per rolling 12 months. Full terms: refund policy.

12What about EU/UK 14-day right of withdrawal?

You have the statutory 14-day withdrawal right under Directive 2011/83/EU and the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, in addition to the 30-day money-back. Email legal@techbantu.us. Note: starting Pro features waives withdrawal once we've fully performed.

13Can I move my Pro license to a new Mac?

Yes. Pro entitlements are bound to up to three devices. Use your recovery key (shown once after purchase) to activate on the new Mac. If you've hit the limit, deregister an old device from the paywall.

14What if I lose my recovery key?

Email support@techbantu.us. We'll guide you through the reset flow which uses your card last-4 (verified against Stripe) to prove identity. We never reuse old keys.

How it works

15What macOS versions are supported?

macOS 13 Ventura and later. Apple Silicon recommended for fastest local transcription. Intel Macs work but inference is slower.

16Does it really work in the terminal?

Yes. iTerm, Warp, Terminal, Hyper, Alacritty, Kitty — all tested. Insertion uses Accessibility (not paste hacks), preserving cursor position, modifier states, and command-line modes.

17How accurate is the transcription?

Whisper Turbo (default) is roughly state-of-the-art for English with light accents. Technical jargon, code identifiers, and proper nouns are handled by context awareness — it knows you're in Xcode and preserves camelCase, knows you're in Slack and keeps @mentions.

18Can it run fully offline?

Yes — once the Whisper and Qwen models are downloaded (one-time, on first launch). After that, transcription, basic polish, and Apple Intelligence work without an internet connection. Cloud Polish (the OpenAI proxy) is the only cloud-dependent feature, and it's optional.

19What model sizes are available?

Whisper: tiny (40 MB), base (75 MB), small (250 MB), medium (780 MB), large-v3 (1.5 GB), turbo (800 MB · default ★). Qwen 3.5 4B (~2.7 GB) for the local LLM. All hosted on Hugging Face. Choose in preferences.

20What's "Genius mode"?

A polish style that does more than fix grammar — it restructures rough speech for clarity, resolves spoken math (10 × 220), and produces near-publication-ready prose. Off by default; pick it from the menu bar when you want it.

21Do you support languages other than English?

Whisper supports ~99 languages for transcription. Polish styles are tuned for English. We're working on broader polish coverage — request your language at support@techbantu.us.

22How do I report a bug?

Email support@techbantu.us with what you tried, what you expected, what actually happened, and (helpful) the macOS version + Mac model. Logs from ~/Library/Logs/VoiceType/ are gold.

23How do I report a security issue?

Email security@techbantu.us. We acknowledge within a few business days. Safe-harbor terms in our security policy: don't exfiltrate user data, give us reasonable time to fix.

24Is there an API or CLI?

Not yet. The app is a UI-first product right now. If you need a programmatic interface, tell us your use case at support@techbantu.us.

25Who's behind VoiceType?

TechBantu IT Solutions, LLC — a Delaware LLC operated by Ranjith Bantu out of Lakeside, California. Solo founder, no investors, no growth-at-all-costs nonsense. We sell software because we want to keep building it.

26Are AI outputs covered by your warranty?

No. AI outputs are probabilistic, can be wrong, and are explicitly disclaimed in our Terms. Don't rely on AI Outputs for decisions affecting health, safety, legal rights, or finances. Always review.

27Can I dispute a charge?

Email support@techbantu.us first — we issue refunds quickly within the policy. Initiating a credit-card chargeback without contacting us first triggers termination + future-purchase ban under §11.8 of the Terms.
